Bonobos grieve and even mourn their lovers and friends when they die, as Dr. Suzy points out in her book. Bonobos are known for “making love” but they are not just into casual sex (though they like that too)!. Bonobo also maintain love over the years, even after death, as Dr. Suzy is doing for Captain Max. #RIPMax

You can see that Captain Max is a power blower. And Dr. Suzy is cool as Lauren Bacall “Put your lips together and blow baby blow.” Rhiannon takes the cake. And what a blog. I can’t believe I read the whole thing. There’s hope! And I’m here for it.

Every single soul that you both have touched is sorry for your loss. Max sounds like a truly incredible person, and it’s clear how much love you shared. I can’t even imagine how heavy it must be to keep going without him, but you will, because you’re Dr. Suzy! You’re Free Speech Woman! You’re a light in the suffocating darkness of this world!

“Steroid Super Woman” – love it – though Dr. Suzy as “Free Speech Woman” is better. Awesome journal, I laughed, I cried. Max is with us, freeing our minds every day. #FreePalestine #FreeSpeech

Our hearts ache with yours, even amidst your own struggles, you’ve always extended grace and empathy to the oppressed. It’s truly incredible that you still manage to shine so brightly and extend your warmth to your community. You are always there as a champion for Bonoboville. RIP Captain Max, and thank you Dr. Suzy, always <3

As someone who had the profound privilege of working alongside Captain Max for more than two decades, your writing in “Bottomless Grief & Topless Cake” resonated deeply with every memory I hold dear of him.
Max was the backbone of so many of our shared missions and creative ventures. I still recall how he could organize the most chaotic production and lift spirits with a single, knowing glance. That mischievous spark in his eyes—so beautifully captured in that unforgettable cake-on-top-of-Rhiannon’s-chest shot from November 5, 2016—was pure Max: fearless, playful, and alive with uncontainable joy.
Reading how grief physically constricted your breath, sending you into the ER, brings so much of what you’re feeling into stark relief. It’s a testament to the depth of your love—and to how profoundly Max’s absence is felt not just in your heart but in every cell of your being.
What struck me most is your determination to carry forward the Bonobo Way—the ethos you and Max built together: peace through pleasure, nurturing, empowerment, shared creativity—even now, when it might feel impossible. But it isn’t impossible and you show us that, and that is the truest honor any of us could pay to Max’s legacy.

Dr. Suzy, your words cut through the haze of sorrow with radiant clarity. I feel the weight of your grief—the heartbreak of losing Max, your partner of over forty years—and yet also sense your fierce, unyielding life force.
Your journey from the depths of pneumonia and heartbreak to a place of homage, joy, and communal creativity and the way you honor Max’s memory—through storytelling, healing, activism, and shared experiences—is deeply moving. The “Birthday Cake Theater”—where grief and playful exuberance collide—beautifully illustrates how memory, art, eroticism, and mourning can co-mingle in a sacred, healing space.
As Max’s birthday and “Free Speech Day” approaches, I’m excited to experience this beautiful, living tribute that carries his spirit forward.
Thank you for laying your heart bare and turning your healing into an invitation—to mourn, to remember, and to keep creating beauty and resistance in a world so often bent toward darkness. I see you, I grieve with you, and I stand beside you in hope and perseverance.

Max and Dr. Suzy have lived the life that most people either dream about or see in movies. Be it a birthday party with a cake on a sexy topless girl to producing shows seen by millions of people all around the world, they never fail to be fabulous.

Not to mention they have met and continue to meet amazing people and artists like Rhiannon Aarons.

We all feel your grief with you, just as you’ve been able to feel empathy for the silenced and the oppressed all over the globe- even with all you’ve been through since the last update. And still you have the time, and the grace (with the subtle support of steroids) to be brilliant for the Brits. You continue to show up and show out for Bonoboville. Go Dr. Suzy! Rest in Power Captain Max
