My Beloved Max: A Series of Collages
On a Journey through Life
by Dr. Susan Block.
Collages are collisions of images and emotions. This “Family/History” collage is made up of images of my beloved Max, featuring his early life in Rome, Naples and Genoa, Italy; the great ship Italia that took Pr. Maximillian R. Leblovic Lobkowicz di Filangieri (11/8/1943 – 5/13/2025), aka “Mickey,” aka “Captain Max,” and fellow refugees, to America, starting in Montclair, New Jersey, before migrating to LA where he connected with a wide variety of fellow travelers, including me…
As for the emotions colliding with the images that make up this collage (thank you Canva)… well, mainly, I was feeling the pain of having lost my darling Max, but also the pleasure of ogling and combining these snapshots of my handsome hubby taken before I met him, with the images of us together – in sickness and in health – our show, our wedding, a little mixing of our families and close friends (including a few bonobos cousins), as well as a show where we talked about Max’s aristocratic Lobkowicz and Filangieri ancestry. Then I trimmed and fit all the pain, pleasure and imagery into a mosaic that tells a story – history that is HIS story (though not his whole story; remember, I’m making a collage series) – that I think my darling Max might like. “The goal is the journey,” as Max often said, and what a journey through life he took.
Make sure to click on the collage to see all the little parts of the story.

I’m also in the midst of grieving my man as you know, Susan. And one thing I am finding helpful is continuing to celebrate the milestones. So I celebrated our 15 year anniversary even though he didn’t quite make it to that day. And in a couple weeks I will celebrate his birthday

A life well lived…….

This collage is so trippy, I could get lost in all the little pictures from the misty past. Then again, I’m kind of stoned.

The world and especially America is so messed up and things are only getting worse. We really need to learn from Captain Max’s journey. This collage is like a map for a hero’s quest.

Aw… so cute you have bonobos in your family! As Dr. Jane Goodall (RIP) used to say, humans, bonobos, chimps and the other apes are all in the Great Ape Family. And what a great visual tribute to the human you love ❤ Pr. Max + Dr. Suzy = Forever.

What a moving tribute, Dr. Suzy. Your “Family/History” collage is more than an art piece — it’s a heartfelt narrative woven from memory, joy, loss, and love. You’ve captured not just the life of Max but also the emotional landscape that accompanied your journey together. I felt pulled into his story — his roots in Italy, his migration, your shared moments — all colliding beautifully in that mosaic. Thank you for sharing such an intimate portrait of a life so richly lived. May Max’s legacy continue to inspire, and may your art continue to heal and celebrate.

BRAVA to the collage artist – Dr. Suzy – and BRAVO to the life and the man who lived it: the only and only Captain Max!

Incredible collage of Captain Max’s life by his wife, the incomparable Dr. Susan Block.

Love Max’s different looks through the years – like James Dean in his teens, the different caps and hats, and then in his last years among us, good old Max in his keffiyeh waving the Palestine flag – yes!

What a dazzling tapestry of her beloved Max’s life Dr. Suzy has created here – weaving almost a century of images of post-war Italy, mid-century Jersey and Underground LA. Love all the international history and Max HIStory.

What a deeply moving tribute. This collage captures not just memories, but the soul of a life enthusiastically lived and deeply loved. The way you brought together Max’s history, your shared romantic journey, and the emotions of both joy and grief tells a powerful story. It’s clear how special he was and how much love surrounded him. Thank you for letting us witness a piece of that passion and legacy.

I love to see the old school pictures in black in white from Italy and the 1971 Los Angeles Staff picture as well. Showing his life through pictures altogether to see like this is beautiful and endearing <3

I love this artistic representation of Max’s family journey, such a calm and colorful collection of images to look through!! I love the black and white images sprinkled throughout and how those change the landscape of the overall image!!
