Digging into the massive BlockFilms archives, Mars FX stumbled upon this hidden jewel of an interview I conducted over 20 years ago with fabulous fetish icon Dita Von Teese.

“Art of the Teese” aired live on the World Wide Web via “Vital Stream,” circa December 1, 2001—three years before there was Youtube!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, after the live broadcast, this remarkable show was never posted… until now!

During this time, with the wounds of 9/11 still painfully fresh, U.S. President George W. Bush, Dick and Rummy’s absurdly named War on Terror was busy bombing poor Afghanistan and building torture camps in Guantanamo, while shackling the rest of us to the Patriot Act.

Those were strange days. U.S. President George W. Bush, Dick and Rummy’s absurdly named ‘War on Terror’ was bombing Afghanistan and opening torture camps in Guantanamo, rolling out the full draconian war package, including nonconsensual torture and “detainee” bondage, while shackling the “Homeland” to the Patriot Act.  Needless to say, at the time, the internet felt like the freest place to be, and a consensual BDSM-oriented interview seemed like a great, sex-educational, subtly antiwar, kink-positive thing to do.

So, here we were broadcasting live from bed with fetish supermodel Dita Von Teese! Oddly enough (maybe because we were in the midst of suing the LAPD that month), after the live broadcast, we never got around to posting this remarkable show… until now!

At the time of the interview, Dita was on the cusp of kinky superstardom crossed with mainstream celebrity—a budding lingerie queen just beginning to design what would soon grow into her multi-million dollar Dita Von Teese brand. A delicate beauty who’s also a tough (but sweet) cookie, Dita glided gracefully to the top of her illustrious burlesque and fetish-modeling career—and all while dating controversial rock superstar Marilyn Manson. Now, of course, Manson is much more controversial, accused (not by Dita) of horrific crimes, which he denies and for which he has sued his accusers. Both Manson’s fans and foes will find much of interest in this in-depth interview.

This was Dita’s second appearance on The Dr. Susan Block Show, as her first was on my very special 1996 interview with the one and only Bettie Page.

Dita takes it to the next level in “Art of the Teese.” Not only does she speak freely, thoughtfully—and yes, teasingly—about her life and art; she also lets us tie her up!

Everybody needs a little tease, at least sometimes. Men need to be teased because it makes them slow down. Women need to be teased because it makes us come around. Teasing puts the pizzazz and the mystery into sex, otherwise we’d just be rutting animals. Nothing wrong with rutting animals, of course. And, actually, even animals tease. Look at the stop-start, pounce-retreat, mating dances of birds and cats and dogs and apes and even snakes. They do a mating dance.

A good tease is erotic but indirect, building up to total seduction and surrender slowly. As that consummate striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee once said, “Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly.”

A great tease has all the time in the world. And with a great tease, well, you never know if you’re going to get the gold that you’re going for. You might; but you might not. I think I lost a little of the baby fat in my face, right?

No, I always worked in a lingerie store, that was my first job, and in high school I always had a steady boyfriend. So I you know, I was very adventurous with my teasing. You know, I always had one man and I like to, you know, work my my wiles on that one guy, you know. You got to get more creative that way.

But now you work your wiles on millions, right?

DITA
Yeah, yeah, I guess so.

Dr. SUZY
And you’re pretty good at that too, you know. So you started modeling.

DITA
Yes, I, right around the time that I met you when I discovered Bettie Page and decided that the world was ready for some of the same things that she was. So well known for and that’s you know I I always wanted to emulate what it was that people liked about her. More than exactly what she looked like.

Dr. SUZY
Well, people liked so many different things about her. She was the Girl Next Door, really the Bad Girl Next Door, and she was the Queen of Pin-Up, but also the Queen of Fetish. And some of the fetishes were pretty dark.

And so then this was when you discovered Bettie Page?

DITA
Probably a couple years before that.

18 yeah, not 18, I think and so.

Did you encounter her as the pinup queen or the fetish queen?

DITA
Well, I first encountered her as a pinup. I, I first saw Olivia’s paintings of her, so that’s yeah, that’s.

Oh, Olivia… Very idealized, right?

DITA
So when I was, you know when I was trying to do Bettie, then I was kind of going from her paintings, so it was kind of surreal. So then I found out she was an actual woman and did my research from there.

Yes, but it’s much harder to act on. It’s a much bigger leap for most men who identify as heterosexual.

DITA
Yeah, right?

Dr. SUZY
Than for most women who identify as heterosexual. For a woman to get drunk and be with her girlfriend is not such a big deal.

DITA
I think every man I’ve ever taken seriously or enjoyed in my bedroom has at least swapped a little spit with another man just just for fun.

Dr. SUZY
I would think so.

DITA
They ought to know how to party.

Dr. SUZY
You being the fetish supermodel of the 21st century. Do you have a favorite fetish?

DITA
Well, I really love corsets and stockings. High heels.

I’m sure you could. So how about your family? What do they think of what you do?

DITA
Well, with the bondage, it was kind of difficult with my family because how do you explain to your family? Well, I do this fetish thing. It’s, it’s kind of hard to explain to your parents, so at first it was kind of like they didn’t really know what was going on. But then I started doing things like Playboy. I started appearing in Playboy book of lingerie issues. It’s funny when Playboy makes you acceptable to your parents, right? Yeah, that was it. It’s true though, my parents like validated that’s an American icon, right? What I was doing, although. We get it now. Well and when I started actually getting legitimate, you know traveling all over the world and getting paid to shoot fetish magazines. I you know I showed my parents everything.

Yeah and they like to see magazine covers. You know, they get excited.

Yes, but not the bondage.

I’ve really learned how to, ’cause you can really freak out in some of those positions.

I’ve learned what it takes for me not to get nervous and scared and worried, and it helps when someone who is doing bondage on me for a photo – like intricate bondage – if they talk to me, and if I talk to them and I’m not paying attention to what’s going on and the next thing you know it’s done. Well, this corset actually was a mistake and got made in the wrong size. So it’s a comfortable size. A 20.

Right. The smallest I’ve been measured is a 16.

But that’s with a certain corset that was made custom for me to be to make me go that small. And but generally I do around like 17 or 18.

16 inches – that, that’s something you must have to keep exercising to maintain. Well, not really I don’t. I used to be really obsessed with it and saying I have to have the smallest waist of all the fetish models. But I kind of got over it.
