Beyond TABOO with Kay Parker on DrSuzy.Tv
Length 1:31:04 Date: Dec. 14, 2013
As a sex therapist, I hear from many clients with mother issues. Occasionally, some sort of literal sex is involved, though much more often, it’s “emotional incest,” with any and all sex taking place only in the erotic theater of their minds. Common as it is, being a “mother lover” or “mom fetishist” can be a lonely, shame-laced life. Some may find validation for their desires in Freud’s infamous “Oedipus complex,” while mythology buffs may note that the Greek goddess Aphrodite and her son Eros were lovers. But by far the most frequent cultural reference made is to the 1980 adult feature film TABOO (the first of the series), in which a suburban American mother seduces her older teenage son. More specifically, these clients are enthralled, sometimes to the point of obsession, with the performance of the actress who plays that mother, the sensuous, soulful and eternally maternal Aphrodite of porn’s Golden Age: Kay Parker.
Despite her fame, which has only spread with the world-wide availability of Taboo on the Internet, this iconic actress has been a woman of mystery for the past decade or so. Essentially, she has been focusing on her spiritual development, writing her memoir, TABOO: Sacred, Don’t Touch: An Autobiographical Journey Spanning Six Thousand Years (also available on her site) and staying out of the limelight.
So I’m delighted and honored to welcome former adult star Kay Parker—now spiritual guide Kay Taylor, aka author Kay Taylor Parker—into the RadioSUZY1 broadcast studios in Bonoboville at LAX for this live, in-depth, explicit, utterly engrossing and unprecedented interview which you can listen to for free at the link above or watch on DrSuzy.Tv (we’ll have the video of the interview—intercut with Taboo footage—posted in the next couple of days).
For Kay Parker fans, this is a must-see. In the course of our 90-minute one-on-one, Kay tells highlights of the story of her extraordinary life—so far. Though according to her book, she’s “incarnated approximately 182 times”—and that’s just since her arrival on Earth—we concentrate on this life. It begins in the “sad grey world” of Post-WWII England, the world that spawned the Beatles and Rolling Stones, where little Kay experienced much “frustration and a deep sense of not belonging.” Like many youth, Kay escaped her less-than-pleasant reality through fantasy, both on the big screen at the local cinema, where she had an out-of-body experience (OBE) watching Flash Gordon (a fellow Yalie who went off on a series of interplanetary adventures), and in the small screen of her mind, where astral beings beckoned and a voice whispered into her ear, “You are one of the chosen.”
Whether or not you believe in astral beings, if you’re one of the many viewers who will never forget Kay’s powerful performance in Taboo, you might agree that she is, somehow, “chosen” or destined to make her mark on some of the deepest, most conflicted recesses of the human imagination.
Other episodes in her early years seem to have influenced her sexuality and her work. Not surprisingly, Kay had an intense relationship with her dashing daddy who was often away from home. One incident which she calls the “penis du père,” which she describes in detail on this show, involves accidentally seeing her father’s penis for just a few innocent moments before he realized he was naked and dashed away. This was a pivotal moment for sexual awareness when Kay’s father’s feelings of sexual shame virtually transferred themselves like a virus into his young daughter’s impressionable mind.
Kay recalls another childhood occasion when she was examining her genitals, as most healthy children are inclined to do. But when her mother walked in, catching Kay in the act, she slapped her exploratory little hand and warned her to “Never let me catch you doing that again!” Talk about giving her the shame bug… This sort of transference of sexual shame from parent to child has gone on in most human cultures around the world throughout civilized history. It’s one reason Taboo is so powerful, despite its farcical elements. It taps into primal, forbidden longings that simmer just beneath the surface of family life. Well, some families…
Taking a roundabout route through Europe, Kay split dreary Birmingham for sunny Southern Cali in the liberating tumult of the Sexual Revolution, and soon found herself having sex in her fateful first scene as a horny housewife who gets it on with a robot in Sam Weston’s Sexworld. She talks about her roles in several other adult films, as well as a small but distinctive part in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. But we keep coming back to Kirdy Stevens’ eerie Taboo, specifically the scene where Kay’s character, Barbara Scott, seduces her son Paul.
What is it about this scene that’s so intense—not just for fans but for Kay herself? For one thing, as Kay reveals, her own family issues and unspoken desires, combined with her mixed feelings about doing the film in the first place, gave the material a personal edge. Second, Kay had unusually strong chemistry with Mike Ranger, the handsome 26-year-old who played her son Paul, the electricity really crackling, since it was their first sex scene together.
Another element is the character’s state of mind. In the film, Barbara Scott has just been assaulted by no less than four men. First, her own husband treats her like his own personal blow-up doll, after which the shmuck packs his bags and leaves her for another woman. Then she gets a job, and her new boss harasses her. She goes on a blind date with a guy who takes her to an orgy without telling her, where some other lothario molests, humiliates and almost rapes her.
That night, she lies in bed, trying to sleep, but images of her own voluptuous, naked body at the center of that orgy are driving her wild. She masturbates, but that doesn’t seem to help. She reaches for a sedative, finds the bottle empty, throws on a slinky white nightie and ventures down the hall to the medicine cabinet, when she sees her wonderful, handsome, smart, loving, caring son lying naked on his bed with his door open, his giant erection in full bloom. She turns this way and that, unsuccessfully trying to avoid looking at him, torn by deep complex emotions. She knows that what she desires is terribly “taboo” and, unlike some of her more self-centered girlfriends, she’s a careful, caring mom. Then she hears her son moan in his sleep. At least, he appears to be asleep…
That moan, Kay recalls, was what triggered it for her. This was the point at which she really surrendered—as an actress and a human being—to the extraordinary power of that moment and the tsunami of primal passion flowing from mother to son, woman to man, actress to actor, performer to audience, Mother Earth to All Her Children, and back again in the erotic cycle of life.
Kay explains how she discovered an interesting proof of this power when she took a friend’s “muscle test” for passion. Based on kinesiology principles, her friend had her sit with her legs apart, her fingers interlaced behind her neck while she thought of a passionate experience. The stronger the passion, the less likely her friend would be able to push her legs together. On her first and second tries, Kay thought of personal romantic experiences that represented passion to her, but each time her friend pushed her legs together with ease and declared, “No passion.” Then she remembered her seduction scene in Taboo, and her friend found her legs set immovably apart, whereupon he dramatically proclaimed, “That’s passion!”
No wonder it is one of the most beloved scenes in porn history. Another popular Taboo scene occurs when son Paul watches his mother take a shower, soaping, rinsing, toweling off and rubbing lotion into her gloriously nude form before she gets dressed for that fateful orgy date. Though not as intense as the seduction scene itself, the shower is a kind of voyeuristic foreplay, and something with which many people have some experience. After all, not many of us have sex with our parents—nor should we! There are some very valid reasons for the incest taboo—inbreeding, emotional confusion and social problems, to name a few. But many of us have had the unnerving, sometimes erotic, often shame-laced experience of seeing a parent naked, as Kay herself did. Bringing these forbidden incestuous images to life like never before or since, Kay Parker as Barbara Scott imprinted and continues to imprint herself on the collective erotic human imagination. That she does so with tremendous love and sincere warmth is a bonus for viewers of this riveting piece of pornographic cinema.
Full disclosure time: I actually have a very small, non-sex role playing a radio talk show host named Dr. Stella Sydney questioning Jamie Gillis’ character about his theory that fathers are more prone to incest when their wives have sex with other men in Taboo 4. But Kay wasn’t in my episode, and though I’ve long been a fan of hers, and we’d chatted a bit by phone and email, I never met her until this interview… which does seem to have been somehow fated or “chosen” by astral beings. Though we can thank the earthly being of Dave Bertolino for coordinating the interview and driving Kay to RadioSUZY1 studios.
Dave is also helping to coordinate the “Legends of Adult Cinema” section of the Hollywood Show, January 3rd-5th, at the Loews Hollywood Hotel, where Kay will appear (so if you’ve always wanted to meet her, now’s your chance!) along with dozens of other legends and stars of X-rated and mainstream entertainment, including yours truly.
In answer to Panty Boy’s question about which female porn stars she enjoyed working with, Kay mentions Veronica Hart and Seka, and we also give a shout-out to Howie Gordon (who I interviewed live last Saturday about his marvelous Hindsight), all of whom will be at the Hollywood Show.
Then, right after Kay and Dave leave, we get a surprise visit from none other than Ron Jeremy, fresh from his momentous encounter with Elton John (of course, Sir Elton Hercules John is a longtime fan of the Hedgehog), and showing no signs of slowing down despite his aneurism less than a year ago. So we have a little quality “Ron Time,” a bunch of bonobos hanging out in my beautiful new office playing music videos featuring Ron (there are dozens!), while Ron himself autographs Asher’s right boob. Meanwhile, Ron is very excited about the new Bonoboville, claiming it would make the perfect swing club. And yes, there’s sure to be some swinging—from the palm trees, chandeliers, hammocks and jacuzzis—but there’s always something more than swinging going on in Bonoboville… such as exceptional interviews like this one with the luminous Kay Taylor Parker.
P.S. After I finished writing this blog, I got the news that our old pal, Screw Magazine publisher Al Goldstein, just died at the age of 77. I first met Al through Dr. Toni Grant, at the same time I met Ron Jeremy, which was around the time I did that scene in Taboo 4. Al was a good friend, a maverick publisher and a great freedom fighter, arrested almost as many times as Max was. He always encouraged me to be honest, fearless and funny, and he threw delicious brunches at Dupars, Spago’s, the House of Blues and the Friar’s Club, and he took me to the Playboy Mansion so many times, I got sick of it! I will miss you, Al! I’ll say more about him on next Saturday’s show, but I just had to squeeze something in right here when I heard the sad news. RIP Alvin Goldstein (1936-2013).
P.P.S. THIS JUST IN: Word on the tweet is that AL GOLDSTEIN IS NOT DEAD! Is this the Miraculous Resurrection of Al? Not exactly. He is in the hospital, but he’s still alive, as of now. Just goes to show: Don’t believe everything you see on Twitter! Even if your old buddy, professional truth-teller Penn Jillette, tweets it. Hang in there, Al! We love you.
P.P.P.S. Yes, that’s a lot of P-P, but now it’s official: Al’s really dead :( We just got the call from John Clark who talked to Ron Jeremy, and it’s in the New York Times, so it must be true. That’s so like Al–to play a practical joke on the world in his last days here. But the Grim Reaper gets us all, and so we say Good-bye, Al! See you soon at that great Smörgåsbord-in-a-Brothel in the sky! More on the next DrSuzy.Tv show and in the next blog…

Wowwww Kay is in my top 5 favorite vintage porn star. Taboo 1 has been my first porn movie that i seen in my life. Since that…this fantasy has been, is and will be the only one that i’m unable or impossible to realize. I made all in sex: threesome straight and bi, foursome, orgy, with my teacher (she teached me at 12yo she was 32yo at this moment…and our affair at 35yo for me and her 52, She was awesome), gang bang, bdsm soft and hard…with awesome women. But the last one…too taboo to realize… :))) :(((( and it s ok… lol :))) voilà from your no1 fan from Montreal :)))

The greatest Sexblog that i ve ever read..You are the best Susan…and with the greatest mom of porn….it s a consequence to get the best of the best blog.
Question for you Susan: For me incest is very near of a rape. There isn t an agrement to have sex before.
Familysex between adults over 18yo (or better,
over 25yo with experiences in out of standard sex) is an other thing. it’s consensual, there has been a lot of chat before and all know and manage consequences before to play. It’s just for fun…
I must be clear. It’s my last fantasy to do: fuck with a mom and her son/or daughter all bisexual and over 18yo. I’ve never make that with a member of my own family
Do you have the same point the view of me???
As i said before…You are the best of the best.
Sorry for my weak english. I’m french canadian Québécois :)))
From Your Number1 fan from Montreal :) Bravo Susan…tu es la meilleure :)))

Ooooo! Kay Parker!! Taboo & Taboo II were 2 of my favorite 80ies porn videos when i was a young kid! No, not because of the “taboo”/faux incest storyline…because Kay Parker was sooo wickedly hot…so was Aunt Peg, the little actress who played the daughter in part 2 (forgot her name)…loved the orgy scence in 1 and the Kay Parker-Aunt threesome massage scene in 2
