We first met Al Goldstein when we were doing the Outrageous Beauty Revue at The Mabuhay Gardens (aka The Fab Mab) on Broadway in San Francisco in the late 1970’s. Dave Patrick had been covering the OBR since the first show in 1978. Frank often said Dave Patrick was the ONLY person who made any money from the OBR! Anyway, Al Goldstein was in town, so Dave brought him to one of the OBR shows. “The origianl plan called for Goldstein to come onstage and make a pitch for SCREW while a horde of half-naked Amazons ripped off his clothes. Goldstein was so excited by the idea that he spent an hour in his hotel room trying on different pairs of expensive underwear.” (SCREW MAGAZINE 11/28/79) But Frank decided instead to interview Al as part of the live show. There were articles about the interview in both SCREW and the SPECTATOR. Al Goldstein is quoted as saying as he left the stage, “Take me to a synagogue…it was the weirdest interview I’ve had in 11 years. It is sick personified. Do I throw up or applaud?”

Some time later Al wanted to do a segment on Frank for his MIDNIGHT BLUE show but Frank did not want to use the videographer, Jerry Abrams, that Al sent because Frank had not been happy with video footage that Abrams had shot of the OBR in the past. Goldstein blew up over this and that was the last time both him and Abrams ever talked to us! Funny, but Dirk Dirksen, producer of the Mabuhay Gardens shows during that period told us years later that he had run into Abrams many years after this incident and Dirk said to us, “Frank I don’t know what you did to this man, but he is still SO mad at you!!!” Frank, of course, shrieked and laughed.
