As you said, they were reduced to analogies between the divine and his creation. My opinion: if that were true, it would have been omitted. Its redundant. Therefore they were INCLUDED to remind us of true sensual selves. The ones that celebrate the flesh. The ones that don’t need monogamy or ceremonies to love and share. Since our flesh was made in the image of God, the celebration of it is communal at the least and an act of worship at best. Dr. Suzy, thanks for reminding me that my God is not sexist or cruel. Thanks for reminding me that I was created to be a lover. Thanks for reminding me that there is no separation of the flesh and spirit. We are one, and I am okay exactly the way that I am. Praise JAH! My favourite. They arouse passion and at the same time soothe the soul. Another favourite quote of mine ” I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.”
