This was supposedly the netherworld of unbaptized babies and worth pagans, and Dante wrote extensively about it. The new pope has decided that the doctrine should not be a doctrine. Why the need to change it now is unclear but some suspect it is an attempt to make firmer the dangers of abortion. What category the aborted fetus will not be put in should raise an interesting discussion. Previously whether it was a miscarriage or an abortion they were simply in limbo. The church is also growing mostly in undeveloped countries where infant mortality is high;. Perhaps it is an effort to give the mother who has lost a baby somewhat more helpful news than before. I suspect, however. it is aimed at abortion and will result perhaps in the mother being accused of murder. At least it raises new kinds of questions. Vern
