I just read your article on the “Massage Parlor Massacre” in the Counter Punch website. I just really was moved with what you said, and really validated some of my current beliefs. Im just recognizing how you so eloquently described the dangers of Sex Addiction movement combined with dangers the gun movement and religous right.

Ive been in Sex Addiction therapy and attending SAA 12 step meeting for alomst 2.5 years due to some out of control sexual behavior. But the whole Atlanta incident woke me up, I also felt the fundamental religious values reach into the therapy, and began to question it. My group, therapy I had to hear how shameful fantasizing was and was chastised for masturbating even though im in almost sexless marriage. You know the sex addiction gig better than me, but I felt empowered by your perspective. Im disengaging from the Sex Addiction model. But in some paradoxical way its difficult, since most of my friends now ars self proclaimed sex addicts and my wife feels safe by it. It like coming out by questioning this. But you give me courage.

Im intrigued by your book “The Bonobo Way”. Im going to buy it and read it. I have a soft sport for the endangmerment of wild animals. And I would like to thank you for your earnest courage in fighting for the truth and against the giant commercial industry of sex addiction.

Awesome show and Counterpunch article. Best I’ve seen on those awful murders. I also agree with you that Biden shouldn’t be calling Putin a killer. All these world leaders are killers, and the last thing we need is WWIII. Biden is better than Trump, certainly with Covid and race issues. But they’re all killers. One more thing: Years ago, an ex-girlfriend called me a sex addict. I called her a prude, and that was that. Maybe we should have gotten relationship counseling at the Dr. Susan Block Institute, but I didn’t know about you then.

“For people who call others “sex addicts,” it’s usually a bitter accusation of the foulest, most humiliating magnitude; it’s what you call your son or your husband when you find porn on his phone. Like, “What are you, a sex addict?”

I sent it to my step mom who lives in Atlanta and was “heartbroken” over the lives lost, while I myself have felt “heartbroken” that her obsession with Jesus often has made it difficult for my Dad to feel like the “man” in her life —it feels like she is more married to Jesus than him…. so it’s not my relationship, but I do feel responsible, and being able to share this allowed me to respond in some way that felt better. I am so pleased to see that you are talking about “Male Well-Being” as part of the Bonobo Way. So many times on unsocial media, one gets the feeling that if every CIS male with lines up in a firing squad and shot on mercifully, the world would be a much better place. The problem is that many men DO need to learn respect towards non-males, but this country as a whole needs to accept and embrace its own sexuality. It’s own horniness, if you will.
A lot has been said about the sex-positives bonobos that you have champion for so many years, but it all boils down to the fact that these gentle creatures are not only open about the sexuality, but they have all but replaced aggression with that. Imagine if humans, especially Americans, adopted this. It’s something I fight for daily.
God, we’re in such a mess.

We’re allies in this tragedy. I’ve often debated strangers on YouTube over “sex addiction” and how people throw it around when judging others for their sexual enjoyments, their sex-positivity. As you probably know, the Sex Addiction movement, 12-Steps, and groups have made who knows how much money as well as fed into hyper-neuroticism. It’s been around for decades, but when everyone throws “addict” around so recklessly, the net effect can heavily shame and damage the target of the judgments. A HUGE part of the problem is, for example, how the Church / Christians don’t talk matter-of-factly about sex and desire and pleasure. It’s more hush-hush, “private”, or something so bad that they would rather not be flat-out-honest about the day-to-day desires of sexuality. ( P.S. – This is very embarrassing and a horrible reflection upon the Church, though of course many folks I know who are Evangelicals would never tacitly approve of anything near this heinous act by this murderer. )

In this country, we often ignore and refuse to talk about the 800-lb gorilla in the room– Religion.

Religion is a doubled edged sword. Sure it does a lot of good, a lot of volunteer work is staffed by religious people. However, there is a dark side to religion– namely shame, guilt, and anger. The dark side of religion is responsible for countless wars and acts of violence and it is a shame that the massacre took place when it didn’t have to.. If we as a society embraced our sexual selves and made sex a wonderous thing (which it is) and made sex available for all (like the bonobos) then tragedies like this (sexually frustrated bible thumpers shooting up a place) wouldn’t happen.

Thank you for highlighting the victims before discussing the shooter. So often these victims are faceless, while their perpetrators’ faces and names are splashed over news feed after news feed. You are absolutely right that this act was against sex workers! I hadn’t realized it until you brought it to my attention. This act perhaps has racist undertones, but it’s rooted against his own “temptations” and when you break it down, the religious right IS pushing anti-sex agendas and censorship. It is also unacceptable this white man can get a gun quicker than “a woman can get an abortion.” Boulder CO passed a ban on assault riffles back in 2018, prompting the NRA to sue the city. A judge reversed that ban only 10 DAYS before this shooting, allowing Long the ability to purchase the gun only 6 DAYS before he shot and murdered these innocent victims. The NRA has the blood of these victims on their hands too, and should held accountable.

Amazing and passionate blog Dr. Suzy! There’s so much to unpack here. It is also something I am deeply passionate about. I saw a comment on Twitter: now that Covid restrictions are lifting, it’s a sad reality that mass shootings are once again emerging. Sad that so many people’s live are dependent on a white man and gun and whether he had a bad day or not. The Killer (I hate using his name) felt bad about sexual “sin” but was OK with killing innocent humans?

I hope he feels bad and knows he’s definitely going to Hell now if there is one, and in cases like these, I really hope there is. But…as an ex-Christian, I do understand somewhat the feeling. It seemed easier to confess to any other sin besides the sexual kind. It can be a lot to undo the teachings we learn in the church. Religious sexual abuse is a major thing that so many still struggle with.
