A historical masterpiece documenting a time so magical it seems surreal.

Anyone who has ever been to Zorthian Ranch knows the powerful tranquility which emanates from the top of the mountain, the sheer beauty of the view in every direction, and the zen-like gratitude of the locals… There has never existed a better location for positive hedonistic indulgence.

in ’00, my friend nico and I spent a whole day at zorthian’s ranch in altadena. jirayr was one of the coolest and most interesting people I’ve ever met in my life. we hiked around his ranch looking at artwork, taking and stopping once in a while to drink a bottle of wine. I think I spent over an hour looking over the ‘feynman wall’ that he, his wife dabney and richard feynman worked on over the years. I could honestly go on for 100+ lines here…it was one of the most amazing days of my life. I was sad to hear of his passing in 2004.
    Great film!

This is exactly the kind of vintage footage that makes Dr. Suzy so unique. What a treasure to have the memory of a man and his philosophy saved for posterity in a fashion no one else does. Makes me wish I was around back then to dance nude around this giant of a little man. Thanks for posting this, what a great gem.

So beautiful. SO beautiful. What an incredibly magical and provocative man!!! This film reaches me in my etheric body, as well as the recesses of my deepest longings for my planet … the mise-en-scéne so rich, luscious, natural in every possible way–art, nymph goddesses, paintings, light and sky–but you caught the light and the shadows to fully showcase this tapestried wealth of history, family, community. From a harrowing tale of a childhood witnessing his native country’s genocide to his gorgeous wife’s etched-by-years face as her story too is brilliantly captured we get to catch a few glimpses of your attentive microphone wielding sunny smile flat-midriff hipster self (love the shot of you in the dark glasses hugging JIrayr towards the end) … not only that, but the 12year old black niece of your assistant was shooting footage with you. That is a real and a solid part of her life forever as well as contributes to the deep tones of this piece; just like Zorthian’s kissing of the baby was a spiritual rite of passage for the entire film as well as the community… lastly, you are a badass. You know how to step out of your life and keenly observe the key elements of a friend’s.

This is really great! Very sorry that I missed the actual event. I was only once at Zorthian’s ranch, I think in 1999, at the annual event. I also met and spoke with him at the Forest Lawn funeral of model LaLa Lezlie a few years later. He was the same age as her at the time — 92!

I have fond memories of Jerry (Jirayr) and Dabney – they were two of the first people I met when I moved to Pasadena.

Great piece Dr. Suzy, totally not HD technology. Just a beautiful moving digital painting on an old Sharp View Cam. I love it and I love you too….
