Zorthian
& Yale
One of the great artists of our times, Colonel Jirayr H. Zorthian (Yale, '36), was also one of Yale University's most fascinating alumni. Yale, after all, is not just a powerbroker's training ground for the Bushes and Skull & Bones. America's second oldest university has also produced some extraordinary artists. Think Samuel F. B. Morse (Yale, 1810), an artist whose most famous creation was the telegraph. And think Colonel Jirayr H. Zorthian, "larger-than-life" artist, rancher, friend, lover, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and connoisseur of joie de vivre. Recently, Zorthian passed away at the age of 92, attributing his longevity to fine art, red wine and being surrounded--at least once a year--by a bevy of beautiful nude dancers. The nymphs, satyrs and thousands of revelers at his world-famous "Primavera" bacchanals dubbed him "Zorbacchus," crowning him king of the bon vivants in the Altadena Hills. Though Zorthian the man has gone, the spirit of "Zorbacchus" has come alive within the downtown LA art gallery of his friend and fellow Eli, Dr. Susan Block (Yale, '77). Dr. Block's Speakeasy Gallery is very proud to present several of Zorthian's largest and most important erotic masterworks in the gallery's current show, "EROS 2005," complemented by sculptures, paintings and photography from some of LA and Europe's finest artists, curated by Kim Mendoza. Against this backdrop of magnificent erotic art, on Saturday evening, April 2, beginning at 8 pm, Dr. Block will host a very special night at the Speakeasy Gallery: The ZORTHIAN & YALE ART SALON. This salon will include a gallery tour, the premiere of "ZORTHIAN: Art & Times," a BlockFilms video short, cocktails, Armenian hors d'oeuvres, various "Tales of Zorthian" related by family, including Dabney Zorthian, friends, fellow Yalies, including Alma Cielo (Yale '95) who played violin at many of the Primaveras, and some of the artist's models, including Jennifer Patton, the lovely, mysterious subject of many of his erotic works, and a performance by the always delightful Nymphs of Zorbacchus, featuring Jennifer Patton and Lisa Ann Davis. Music and dancing will top off the evening's celebration of this great man's life and art. Admission to the ZORTHIAN & YALE ART SALON is FREE. But you MUST RSVP by phone to gain admittance. To RSVP and receive address and directions, please call Dr. Block's office at 213.749.1330. |
