The Pain Game a
review of Madame Cléo Dubois's
new S/M art video Madame Cléo Dubois is a virtuoso performer of the sadistic arts, and her video "The Pain Game" is a remarkable glimpse into the story of her life and practice. It is also the only sex educational video that made me cry. No, the tears didn’t trickle because I was smarting from her bottoms’ physical pain, but because I was touched by Cléo’s intense, very personal connection with her masochistic partners--especially a woman named Creed. The Pain Game illustrates Madame Cléo’s philosophy of S/M: If it’s okay to push your limits in sports (Extreme Sports, anyone?), in art (Jackson Pollock, anyone?) and in business (Bill Gates? Michael Eisner? Warren Buffet, anyone?), why not in matters of eroticism? What’s wrong with certain passionate, driven people dedicating themselves to Extreme Sex, specifically, in the case of Madame Cléo Dubois, Extreme Erotic Sadomasochism? Well, you may think something’s wrong with it. But if you do, you probably won’t be seeing "The Pain Game" anyway. If you don’t, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Madame Cléo and her bottoms, her "bottoms" being the people whom she tops, not all of whom are strictly "submissive," but all of whom seem to search for the Ultimate Sensation like devout surfers seeking the Perfect Wave. Madame Cléo helps them to find it. Maybe she’s just a superb actress, but Cléo seems to genuinely enjoy topping her bottoms. She gives pain with passion, as well as a generous dollop of compassion, lots of sensitivity and a little wit from her native France. As a "top," she asks her bottoms to suffer "beautifully, because that’s what turns me on—the beauty part." And beautiful it is. Many images of sadomasochism are, to the uninitiated, rather ugly or at least kind of gross. Not the works of Madame Cléo. She is a pain artist. Certainly not everyone will agree with Madame’s idea of beauty. It’s extreme. But there’s little doubt that it’s art. She conducts pain through the human body of her bottom like an orchestra leader conducting music through her orchestra, creating a symphony of sensations. Her bottoms must be up to the task, of course. These are not wimps, but tough, seasoned athletes who obviously pride themselves on taking a great deal of exotic types of excruciating pain, just as a fine musician prides herself on being able to play an especially difficult piece.
Madame Cléo’s first bottom in The Pain Game is Brad Chapman, a tall, muscular gentleman who seems to relish taking various forms of Extreme Pain as much as Madame delights in dishing them out. Creed is the more lyric of the two bottoms. She literally becomes a human sculpture when Madame applies clothespin feathers to the translucent skin of her back to create the glorious wings of a bird. The Mistress then pierces a circular design around each of Creed’s breasts, inserting silver pins that create an Aztec-like pattern. A pattern of pain, since each piercing, though temporary, must hurt. The "sex" happens as Madame makes her pretty bird fly. As Cléo carefully but forcefully pulls her on a leash attached to her piercings and Creed flaps her "wings," her breathing fast and shallow with excitement, exertion and pain, this bird almost does seem to be soaring. Watching the energy exchange between top and bottom is exhilarating. I remember seeing Cléo and Creed perform this Bird in Flight Piece onstage in San Francisco at Cat Sunlove’s birthday party. It was exquisitely theatrical, startling and profoundly stirring. But seeing it on video in close-up is, of course, much more intimate, more personal and moving in a whole different way.
In the Pain Game, Madame Cléo is a director, pushing her actors to go that extra mile so that the two of them can produce a master theater piece. She is also a ‘nurse," piercing her bottoms delicate skin with deftness and care, caring for the wounds of her "patients." She is an Earth Mother, wicked as the Earth as the Earth is wicked, constantly causing pain and more pain, and yet kind as the Earth can be kind, giving the gift of life and feeling and tenderness. She also reminds of my first ballet instructor, strict and demanding as a Grand Inquisitor, making me plier et reveler until my legs felt like broken branches of crackling fire. And she is, above all, a French Lover, sensuously kissing each of her bottoms on the lips. Speaking of which, the fact that Cléo is married to that world-famous pain and piercing-master, The Fakir, is barely mentioned in passing. She wisely states that "couple counseling" has helped keep this remarkable pair together over the years. On the video, the Fakir is credited with Title Design, Photo Scans and being the Master Helper. The Pain Game is a simple video about complex feelings. It’s not very flashy, no special effects. Just personal passionate connections and Extreme Sex, thickly laced with the art of pain. The art of pain, or S/M, is, in part, about healing and grieving, as Madame Cléo reminds us. If the chemistry between top and bottom is right, whipping lets the grief out. Madame pushes us until we fly, and flying hurts. Love hurts. Loss of love hurts even more. And so the tears fall. And the healing happens. To order THE PAIN GAME by Phone, call 213.749.1330 .......................
